25th ANNIVERSARY CLUB TOUR OF
THE SLANT-SIX CLUB
SPEEDWELL VILLAGE, MORRISTOWN, N.J.
10-21-2012

As part of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of The Slant-Six Club, originally the NY/NJ Chapter of The Slant-Six Club, seven of our Members met at, and took a guided tour of the Speedwell Village, founded in the early 1800’s by Stephen Vail, who had the vision of building factory complex on the land he had bought. In addition to the Iron Works, Speedwell Village is also known as the birthplace of the American Telegraph system, with Samuel Morse being the one who invented, what for the 19th century, was a groundbreaking technology, and one could say, the forerunner of today’s World Wide Web. There are many of displays at Speedwell Village, depicting work done in the Iron Works once located nearby, including Stephen Vail’s, and his sons, work with the fledgling New Jersey Steam Locomotive building industry in the State in the early 19th century. There is certainly plenty to see, and those with an eye toward things mechanical, might even notice some machinery on display, incorporating gears, quite similar to those in use to this very day in automotive Differential assemblies.
Speedwell Village was suggested by Member Ira Alpert, and was one of three places suggested during our annual March Winter Get-Together/Club Meeting, and voted by our Members as our destination for this celebratory outing. I believe all in attendance at the tour agreed, the winner of the voting, was a place definitely worth visiting, and as a place that held a prominent place in the early stages of America’s Industrial revolution, a fitting place for our Car Club to celebrate its 25th year in existence.
